Before Juanita Vanoy, Michael Jordan's Burgeoning Reputation Helped Him Nab Silver Medallist Kim Gallagher

Michael Jordan is certainly one of the most popular figures in sports. With all he has accomplished, that comes as no surprise. But, things weren’t that different back in the day before all his success. MJ was an up-and-coming NBA superstar, and before he married Juanita Vanoy, he was quite the lady’s man. And, his relationship with former Olympic silver medalist Kim Gallagher is proof of that.

In 1984, a 21-year-old Jordan was the talk of the town. He had just been drafted by the Chicago Bulls and had signed a shoe deal with Nike. A deal, that we all know would go on to make him a billionaire. But, an NBA contract and a sneaker deal wasn’t the only thing he had going for him.

His Airness was also a part of the US Olympic Team that won Gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics. And, it was here in Los Angeles, California that Michael’s fling with Gallagher was nearly unearthed. With Head Coach Bob Knight nearly walking in on the two in Jordan’s suite.

Michael Jordan dated Olympic silver medalist Kim Gallagher before meeting Juanita Vanoy

In 1989, Michael Jordan got married to Juanita Vanoy. The two were married for 17 years and have three loving children named Jasmine, Marcus, and Jeffrey. But, before tying the knot with Vanoy, Jordan was quite the playboy.

Such was his effect on the ladies, that it was documented in an issue of Sports Illustrated in 1984. In particular, his Summer Olympics fling with renowned mid-distance runner Kim Gallagher.

In fact, the “item” that was Jordan and Gallagher was nearly discovered. Head Coach Bob Knight, who was insistent that his players get a “good night’s sleep” would regularly check if they were following curfew. A practice that almost led to him finding out about the duo. Fortunately, MJ and his suitemates were able to hide her in their closet.

“Jordan’s effect on women is positively staggering—a stark reversal of his high school days when Dumbo ears and a self-described “gooney” status with his classmates deprived him of dates. He enrolled in home economics courses as preparation for life as a bachelor, but by the time he arrived at the Olympics in 1984 he had become a renowned ladies’ man. In Los Angeles, Jordan and Kim Gallagher, the silver medalist in the women’s 800 meters, were an item that coach Bob Knight almost discovered one night while checking his players’ rooms at curfew time. Luckily, Jordan and his suitemates hid Gallagher in their closet just before Knight got there.”

There isn’t much information about his relationship with Kim after that. The two went their separate ways, and five years down the line Jordan was with Juanita. Although, their relationship had quite an expensive ending.

MJ ended up paying Juanita Vanoy $168 million as part of their divorce settlement

As mentioned earlier, Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy were married for 17 years. But, their relationship came to an end in 2006, as the two decided to mutually part ways. This, however, cost MJ $168 million, which was the amount he had to pay Vanoy.

The whopping figure made it the most expensive divorce settlement at the time.

It certainly was a hefty sum and one that taught Jordan a lesson. Seven years later, he married Yvette Prieto and this time there was a prenuptial agreement.
