“I Don’t Know If Your Question Is About Michael Jackson”: When Pele Mistook Michael Jordan for the ‘$500 Million Worth Debt Star’
The name Pele has become synonymous with success of Brazilian soccer. He was a superstar athlete before glory and fame became commonplace for athletes. Pele quite literally Revolutionized his sport. He was, fast, he was, flashy, and he was easily the best on the pitch.

The world mourns the loss of the soccer legend. And in his memory, we recall the time Pele made a blunder while in a conversation about Michael Jordan. Usually, greatness recognizes greatness. Unfortunately for Michael, at the time, there was another namesake, who was as popular if not more.
Pele once confused Michael Jordan for Michael Jackson
The man from Sao Paulo made a name for himself around the world. His skills set him apart from the rest of the world. However, even the most skilled can also be at fault.
The same happened with Pele in 2009. Back then, Brazil was attempting to get the Olympics to consider them as hosts. Pele was representing Brazil as their ambassador. The same event also saw Chicago involved in the bidding. Michael Jordan was leading the contingency for the Windy City.
During a press conference, Pele was then asked about Michael Jordan. however, O’Rei unfortunately mistook MJ for Michael Jackson. Though, Jordan and Jackson were always so different. While MJ is a billionaire, Jackson had a $500 million debt at the time of his death. However, like a good sport, laughed at the mistake when it was pointed out to him.
Pele: “I don’t know if your question is about Michael Jackson or about another athlete.”
Well, considering how big of a name Michael Jordan is, it’s quite surprising that Pele wasn’t familiar with Michael Jordan. Afterall, Jordan dominated the 90s as one of the biggest athletes on the planet. But, then, if anyone can be forgiven for not being familiar with MJ, it’s probably Pele.
Ultimately, Pele also ended up influencing the Olympic Committee’s decision. Brazil hosted the the 2016 Olympics, much to Chicago’s dismay.
A huge loss for soccer world
The loss of Pele weighs heavy on the world. Since the last month, he was dealing with severe health issues. Diagnosed with Colon cancer, he was receiving treatment since 2021. However, the last month saw his condition worsen and he was rushed to the hospital. The spread of cancer caused multiple organ failures and Pele passed away on December 29th. He was 82 at the time of his death.
Though the world is currently mourning him, he will live on forever in the memories of soccer fans as perhaps one of the greatest to ever play.
