“I’m Going to the League Next Year!”: Tyrese Maxey ‘Hilariously’ Reveals How Anthony Edwards Is Partially Responsible for Him Missing Classes at Kentucky

Unlike many other players in his draft class, Tyrese Maxey has seen a lot in his three years in the NBA. He witnessed the Ben Simmons situation and is seeing the James Harden drama. However, this is not what he would’ve had in mind 4 years ago, when he was a freshman at Kentucky. Appearing on The Old Man and The Three, Tyrese Maxey was asked about his classes at Kentucky, and the Sixers’ guard had a hilarious Anthony Edwards answer.

Joining the University of Kentucky in 2019, Maxey spent one year in college before listing himself in the 2020 NBA Draft. During his one year in college, Maxey averaged 14 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks. However, a strong game against Anthony Edwards and his Georgia Bulldogs changed everything for Maxey, at least in his head.

Tyrese Maxey hilariously spilled the truth about his time at Kentucky

Just like all other students, the athletes on scholarships have to attend classes as well. In fact, student-athletes have strict rules that influence their eligibility to play for their collegiate teams in NCAA tournaments and such. Now that Maxey is three years out of college, JJ Redick asked him the truth about attending classes at Kentucky.

Talking on The Old Man and The Three, Maxey said,

“You know from our first day all the way up to January, I went to every single class. We played against Anthony Edwards in Georgia, I had 19 points 8 assists 8 rebounds 4 steals 2 blocks. The next day was Wednesday, I was like I’m not going to class, I’m not going to class. I’m going to the league next year man. I’m sorry I can’t go to class, I don’t go to practice, I’m not going to class man.”

Maxey further went on to describe how when it got cold in the later months, that gave him even more reason to skip out on lectures. From having a feeling that he was headed to the league, to actually making there, in the timeline he had in mind, is mighty impressive. We’ll have to see what Maxey has in store for us next, and how he continues to surprise us.

Maxey might play a big role on the Sixers this year

With the James Harden situation and how he made the ‘divorce’ comments earlier today, we can assume that the professionalism that Harden is showing is during the training camp only. He expects to be traded before the season starts, and if it doesn’t happen, we might see the Beard sit out games.

What this means for the Sixers and Tyrese is that he’d have a much bigger role to play. Not only would he have to become the 2nd scoring option behind Joel Embiid, but also, he’d have to take on the role of the primary facilitator. While the Sixers would hope James stays with the team, not having him around would be a good test for Maxey.

The 4th year player would have to jump right into the deep end. How Maxey reacts to the challenge would make the difference between him getting a $100 Million+ extension or a smaller one.
