“I’m Not Negotiating With Myself!": Kobe Bryant Once Explained to Jay Shetty How He Kept Up With His Rigorous Training Plan

In the sport of basketball, there has been no one who can match the intensity that Kobe Bryant possessed. The 6ft 6″ guard was absolutely smitten by basketball and used to do everything in his power to keep working on himself and getting better at the game.

One of the things he was notoriously known for was starting his day at 4 AM. The Mamba used to be training and was done with his first workout even before most others thought of waking up. Kobe’s training routine used to get even more rigorous during the summers.

In the summers, Kobe used to work out four times a day, with the first one starting as early as 4 AM. After that, he’d complete his training and take breaks, return back to the facility and go again.

Kobe Bryant once told Jay Shetty how he kept up with his regimen

In 2019, Kobe Bryant sat down with podcaster Jay Shetty. They talked about a lot of topics, including raising kids, the importance of having structure in life, storytelling, and more. While talking about structure, Shetty asked Kobe how he used to keep up with his tough training routines.

Kobe explained and said,

“I’m not negotiating with myself…I signed that contract with myself, I’m doing it”

Having designed his own training plans, Kobe used to make sure he stayed true to himself. Even if it hurt or he did not want to go in, Kobe never stopped and kept working day in and day out, just to keep getting better.

How did Kobe explain creating separation from the competition?

Kobe Bryant once broke down his success and explained how it’s all math.

If you want to be a great player. If you play every single day 2, 3 hours. Every single day. Over the course of a year. How much better are you getting? Most kids will play, maybe, an hour and a half two days a week? Do the math on that. That’s not gonna get it done. Not gonna get it done.”

It’s simple to put it in words but to imagine Kobe did it for 20+ years. That’s incredible.
