"Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, And Jerry West": Kobe Bryant Named The 3 Most Influential NBA Stars In His Life During His Retirement

Kobe Bryant was one of the most influential players in NBA history. In his final season as an NBA superstar (2016), he was asked who some of the influences were in his career. Speaking from a purely basketball perspective, three players came to mind when he spoke to Ernie Johnson from TNT. Having played 20 seasons in the NBA, there were plenty of stars that came to mind. But, the three players he would thank for their mentorship were Bill Russell, Jerry West, and Michael Jordan.

The Black Mamba is fondly remembered for his exceptional offensive game. A game that he modeled after his idol, Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Kobe looked up to MJ and took the phrase, “Be like Mike” beyond literally. His game was practically a carbon copy of the Bulls legend’s, from his mid-range shot to his mentality. Even Jordan himself noticed this and jokingly accused Bryant of stealing his moves.

Kobe Bryant named Bill Russell, Jerry West, and Michael Jordan as his three biggest influences

For many up-and-coming superstars, Kobe Bryant is still an inspiration. His skill, mentality, and competitive spirit are all things that young players wish to have. But, who were Kobe’s inspirations growing up?

During the 2015-2016 season, leading up to his retirement, the Black Mamba revealed the three players he has been most influenced by. Namely, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, and Jerry West.

His decision to choose MJ was expected. His Airness was famously Kobe’s idol growing up. Additionally, Jordan played the role of a “big brother” for Kobe. He was always there for him and gave him advice whenever he needed it, regardless of the time and place.

As for Bill Russell, while there is no obvious connection, Russell has gone on record, claiming he saw Kobe as a son. And, as for Jerry West, he gave Bryant his start in the NBA. Trading Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets in 1996, West acquired Kobe’s services for the Lakers. Essentially, he put him on the path to becoming a Laker legend.

“From a basketball perspective? I’d say I’d write one to Michael, Bill Russell, and Jerry West. Saying thank you for your mentorship, thank you for always being there for me when I reach out and call.”

All three men are legends of the game, and as such it’s understandable why Kobe was so influenced by them. Now, seven years after his retirement, he has reached the same heights they have. A true legend of the game, Kobe is now influencing hundreds of young ballers who look to emulate him on the court.

Ernie Johnson tried convincing Kobe to pursue a career as an NBA analyst

Kobe Bryant’s decision to retire after the 2015-2016 season came with many questions. In particular, fans wondered what would be next for the Black Mamba. At the time, Kobe was only focused on basketball, but that didn’t stop people from trying to entice him. In fact, Inside the NBA’s Ernie Johnson tried convincing Kobe to become an NBA analyst.

It certainly would have been something to see. Kobe is a basketball savant and his insights would have been great to hear. Unfortunately, the five-time NBA Champion demanded 60% of the revenue, something that TNT definitely couldn’t afford.

Watching Kobe talk about basketball would have been one of the most entertaining and informative things on TV. But, Kobe had no plans for the same. Nevertheless, he had his own pursuits, which included his production company and more importantly coaching his daughter’s basketball team. All of which he enjoyed before he sadly passed away in January 2020.
