Questioning Expectations From $304,000,000 Signee Jaylen Brown, Kevin Garnett Recalls Emotions While Seeking $126 Million Deal

Recently Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Matt Barnes, and Stephen Jackson sat down for an episode of Certified Smoke. Combining the two Showtime podcasts, the four former NBA players expressed their excitement over the upcoming 2023-2024 season. ‘The Big Ticket’ in particular is looking forward to it. One of the things he spoke about is Jaylen Brown‘s new contract. According to KG, Brown will have a lot of expectations placed on him, having signed a $304,000,000 extension. This led to him recalling his own mega-deal that he signed, way back in 1998.

Much like KG, the NBA world was surprised to see Jaylen Brown receive a $304,000,000 supermax extension. The deal is the most expensive the biggest in NBA history. As such, people are looking at JB differently. Given how lavish a contract it is, expectations are high for Brown. This has led many to wonder what he must be feeling with the new season just around the corner. And, Garnett being among them, reminisced about the time he was handed a huge contract.

Kevin Garnett recalls his emotions upon signing a $126,000,000 extension in light of Jaylen Brown’s mega-deal

Heading into the 2023-2024 season, Kevin Garnett is excited about what the league has to offer. However, if there is one thing he is concerned about, it is Jaylen Brown. Having signed a massive deal with the Boston Celtics, KG is curious as to what the expectations are for the guard this season.

A $304,000,000 deal is no joke, but if anyone can answer KG’s question, it’s himself. Back in 1998, when he was no older than 21, Garnett signed a rookie extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves worth $126,000,000. A huge deal at the time, the Big Ticket reminisced about the emotions he felt leading up to the deal.

Going into the negotiations, Garnett wasn’t really focused on the money. All he wanted to do was play basketball, and felt that if he was given one or two more complimentary pieces he could win the regular season MVP award, and even take the T-Wolves all the way to an NBA Championship. However, once the big figures started being thrown around, he put on his business hat.

“I was going there thinking like, “Imma finna win MVP a couple times. If y’all give me one or two players, we can win this motherf**ker!”. And, that’s how I was thinking. But, coming into here, I wasn’t even thinking about that bread. I had to get with the team, lawyer, agent, and all of us sit down and strategize, and then here come the numbers. And, them numbers $145, $154, $165,000,000 that was being asked. I ain’t even 21!”

He recalled how he was hearing offers from $145,000,000 to $165,000,000. Yet, he chose to settle on a six-year deal worth the lower $126,016,300. Not exactly 165, but a hefty sum nonetheless. But, KG always had the mentality to back it up on the court. Will Brown show the same determination? Only time will tell.

Brown and the Boston Celtics have a great chance at winning a championship with the roster they have assembled

After singing Jaylen Brown to the Supermax, the Boston Celtics went to work. With their dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Brown leading the line, the Cs have assembled quite the roster around them. Not only did they bring in Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, but they also managed to add some key pieces in free agency.

With Holiday and Brown in the backcourt, Tatum on the wing, and Porzingis and Al Horford in the front, Boston has a solid all-around starting five. This has led many to believe they are strong championship contenders. Admittedly, while there may be doubts, it’s hard to disagree with that opinion.

One thing is for certain, the 2023-2024 season is sure to be an interesting one, especially for the Eastern Conference. The Celtics have formidable opponents in the likes of the Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New York Knicks. Still, it’d likely be a very bad decision to bet against them this year.
