“Wasn’t going to allow Allen Iverson to fail”: When the Sixers legend’s high school coach threw him on top of a car upon learning about his lackluster approach to education
Allen Iverson had his high school coach throw him onto the top of a car after hearing about Iverson’s negligence towards his studies.
Looking back at the career Allen Iverson carved for himself in the league, it’s safe to say that he was one of the greatest guards to have ever stepped onto NBA hardwood. Though he could never win a championship during his days as a professional, he did everything from win an MVP to claim multiple scoring titles from the early to mid-2000s.
Given the way he approached the game in high school however, saying Iverson would’ve made it to the league wouldn’t have been something people would’ve bet on. Yes, he was a multisport athlete, excelling in both basketball and football, but; he was barely 6’0 tall, did not do any weight training as said by himself, and more importantly, paid no attention in class.
His leniency towards his academics led to him failing a class while producing subpar grades in others. His antics led to his football coach teaching him a lesson in quite a drastic way.
Allen Iverson was given a wake-up call by his football coach.
Due to his negligence towards his studies, Allen Iverson moved in with his high school football coach, Gary Moore. Moore was tough on AI but this didn’t stop the future Sixers legend from continuing to skip out on classes for other activities. Upon learning about this, Moore was furious and decided a physical lesson would be best suited for Iverson.
He threw AI on top of a car following several missed and failed classes to show to him that the way he’s currently acting won’t be flying with him. It’s safe to say that this drastic, yet necessary, action taken by Moore led to Allen Iverson becoming more engaged in his studies and straightening himself out.
When asked about the incident, Gary Moore simply said that he would not allow someone with as much talent as Allen to throw it all away due to a factors outside of his athlete aptitude.
