Arjuna Ranatunga’s distasteful comments about India’s win in the 2011 World Cup Final haven’t gone really well with Nehra and Gambhir, who have come out and rubbished all his claims.

Earlier today Ranatunga dropped a bomb on the cricketing fraternity by claiming that the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka was fixed. Ranatunga was responding to Sangakkara’s comments, wherein the former Sri Lanka captain had questioned the scheduling of the 2009 Pakistan tour, where the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by masked gunmen.

Ranatunga’s baseless comments are hurtful and the 2011 World Cup champions, Ashish Nehra and Gautam Gambhir have come out and voiced their opinion about the same.

Gambhir said that Ranatunga can say whatever he wants to, but should back his claims with proof.

“I am surprised by Arjuna Ranatunga’s allegations. These are serious comments by a very respectable voice in international cricket. I think to clear the air, he should back his claims with proofs,” said Gambhir, who scored 97 in the final.

Nehra too was bemused by Ranatunga’s statements, saying that people shouldn’t be pay much to heed such stray statements.

“I don’t wish to dignify Ranatunga’s comments by airing my views on the issue. There is no end to these kind of statements. If I question Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup victory, is it in good taste? So let’s not get into it. But yes, it is disappointing when someone of his stature says something like this,” Nehra said.

Ranatunga said that he couldn’t believe how the Sri Lankan team performed in the second innings.
