The TD marked McAffrey’s 14th consecutive game with a touchdown, tying him with legendary RB Emmitt Smith for the fourth-most games in a row with a touchdown in NFL history. McCaffrey has emerged as one of the best RBs in the league right now, and it seems his parents are to thank. The 27-year-old sat down with NBC pre-game and discussed having athletic parents, and how they shaped his life and career.
Christian McCaffrey’s Sporting Background
Christian McCaffrey is the son of two very talented athletes. His dad is Ed McAffrey, who was one of the most talented WRs during his time in the NFL. Ed McCaffrey played for three teams in his thirteen-year NFL career, and he was the lead wide receiver for all of those teams at some point. His mom is Lisa McCaffrey, daughter of American Olympic sprinter Dave Sime. She played soccer at the highest amateur level and was a standout player at Standford University. Speaking of his mother’s athletic abilities McCaffrey said,
“She’s definitely the most athletic, we always give her the crown… she was an amazing soccer player, she ran track too, a lot of quick twitch, a lot of speed, and very feisty. Definitely the tone setter of the family.”
About growing up around a father in the NFL, McCaffrey talked about how he didn’t realize how fortunate he was until much later. He expressed gratitude for having the kind of upbringing he did and said,
“I don’t think I realized how fortunate I was kind of until my later years…to have a resource like that: to not just be able to go to him with anything regarding football but to have a dad who played the right way, who knew what it meant to sacrifice for your teammates, to be a good person, to be a good person off the field..”
The RB Had Different Aspirations at First
In the interview, McCaffrey also revealed that it wasn’t until the seventh or eighth grade that he thought of becoming a football player. Since the family played multiple games, he was always swinging between sports. He revealed,
“When it was basketball season, I wanted to be a point guard and when it was baseball season I wanted to play shortstop but you know we all had big visions of playing in the pros but I think we (him and his brothers) did a good job on focusing on what it is what we want to do now in the present.”
Lucky for the NFL fans though that he settled on football. The RB is in the process of shattering every skill position record in NFL history, After a great performance in Week 4, scoring four touchdowns and leading the 49ers to the top, he is now on track to have the highest number of consecutive touchdowns in NFL history. He is already tied at number four with the legendary Emmitt Smith.
