Justin Fields and Pat McAfee

The regular season is done and dusted, and the playoffs are only a few days away. While this is a busy time of the year for 14 teams, 18 other teams are already looking at the next season. In that list, are the No. 1 pick holders in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears. Analysts are already trying to see how they’ll play with this. However, former GM Mike Tannebaum might have some unorthodox suggestions for them.

Speaking on ESPN’s show ‘Get Up!’, Tannenbaum has a somewhat puzzling and questionable take on the Bears’ position. His suggestion for the Bears is one that will not sit well with many Bears fans, including head coach Ryan Poles. Tannenbaum says, “I would trade Justin Fields”. A simple idea, yet with the power to change the course of the Bears’ future. Naturally, Tannenbaum has a reason for his opinion.

“I’m taking nothing away from him,” he says. “I think he has a chance to be good, maybe a top-ten quarterback. But, if you can get at least a first- and a third-round pick, which I believe you can, because so many teams need a quarterback, I’m going to draft Bryce Young, who I think is going to be a better quarterback than Justin Fields.”

“And when I do that and get at least a first and a third-round pick, I’m resetting Bryce Young’s rookie contract and I’m going to be able to get at least four starting-caliber players,” he adds.

Pat McAfee is shocked by Mike Tannenbaum willing to trade Justin Fields

Former Indianapolis Colts kicker Pat McAfee is in utter disbelief after hearing about Mike Tannenbaum’s idea about trading Justin Fields. He seems confused as to why someone would want to do away with the only thing that has worked out for the Bears this season. For him, it makes zero logical sense to take such a gamble.

“This morning he [Tannenbaum] started a conversation that I did not even know was existing. He’s like, if you’re the Bears, trade Justin Fields. Get him the hell out of (there). This is what I would do, he said. Trade Justin Fields, give me a first and a third pick. I get Bryce Young, obviously, as my quarterback. I can get more starters on the team. And he’s cheaper because he’s a new quarterback,” McAfee says.

This obviously does not sit well with him. McAfee points out that Fields is still on his rookie contract, which makes the point about Young being cheaper, moot. “Justin Fields is the only thing that was good for the Bears this year. He almost broke a f****** record. Are you just gonna move on from that if you’re the Chicago Bears?”

It is a sentiment the Bears’ head coach Ryan Poles seems to share. During a press conference on Tuesday, he told reporters that he is more likely to part with his No. 1 draft spot than his No. 1 QB. This means the Bears will keep Fields as their main man leading the offense, and rightfully so.

This is only Fields’ second year with the Bears and in the NFL. Added to that, he threw for 2,242 yards this season, with 17 touchdowns. He also showed his rushing prowess, tacking 1,143 rushing yards under his belt. His performance this season is good enough to warrant another chance, and judging by the trend, he’ll only get better. How will Chicago use their 8 draft picks, though? Only time will tell.
