Michael Thomas Trade Rumors

Michael Thomas Trade Rumors: In a weird turn of events, Michael Thomas may be at the end of his playing days with the New Orleans Saints.

Things surprisngly jumped to this point after the 2019-20 season where Thomas set a record for most receptions in a season with 149 and hauled in a league leading 1,725 yards.

However, Thomas couldn’t replicate his success as he injured his ankle last year, something he was supposed to get surgery done on. However, Thomas delayed his surgery to June/July, and now he’s expected to miss some games for the Saints.

Sean Payton and the Saints management weren’t too happy with the delay and pointed out that Thomas had been ignoring calls all summer long from the Saints. That led to this response from Thomas:

Now, there are trade rumors swirling around Michael Thomas and if he could pair up with another team in the coming months.

Michael Thomas To The Patriots: Could Bill Belichick Pair Mac Jones With An Elite Wide Receiver

There is no question about Michael Thomas’ skillset when he’s healthy. He’s had over 1,000 yards every year in his career since he was drafted in 2016 (with the exception of last year when he was injured).

Thomas isn’t your typical, deep-threat, “throw it up to him and he’ll get it” kind of receiver, but he’s one of the most consistent players you’ll find. He’s a security blanket, and a very good one at that. Thomas excels in the short to medium game and he’s a sure bet to have somewhere between 6-10 high impact catches throughout a game.

That kind of value could be very useful to a team that had a struggling wide receiving core and is set to bring in a new, young quarterback this year. The New England Patriots check off both those boxes.

The Patriots struggled to establish a passing attack last year, and that led to a crazy spending spree in free agency where they brought in pass catchers Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne, and Nelson Agholor.

While all those players are great to have, none of them have ever truly embodied the WR1 one role that Thomas has. They’ve been great, sure, but having someone as consistently productive as Thomas would help out rookie Mac Jones or even Cam Newton tremendously.

You need someone reliable so that players like Agholor and Bourne can break the defense open with their deep-threat ability. Thomas gives you that as he’ll control the short and medium zones. So, will the Patriots pull the trigger on a trade? We’ll just have to wait and see.
