Patrick Mahomes is perhaps the best draft decision the Kansas City Chiefs have made in recent history. The Texas Tech alumnus has been running circles around opposing defenses for the last six years and is arguably on his way to becoming the GOAT. However, for the teams that passed over Mahomes during the 2017 draft, things have not gone so well, especially in the General Manager and Head Coach departments.

Mahomes was drafted 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Therefore, nine teams passed over Mahomes that day and lost an opportunity to get their hands on a player poised for a dynastic run. It turns out that these nine teams potentially felt the heat of not drafting Mahomes, as they ended up firing more than a few general managers and head coaches throughout the next few years.
Green Bay Packers writer Wendell Ferreira noticed this dilemma last year and took to Twitter with his analysis. Wendell found that the Browns and the Panthers each fired two GMs and two head coaches, while the Chargers and the Bengals parted ways with one head coach each.
The Bears, the Jaguars, and the Jets went on to fire two general managers and one head coach, while the Titans fired one of each. The only notable exception is the 49ers, who did not make any changes in those positions.

One would assume the 49ers did not have to take such drastic action as the others because their pick worked well for them. However, that is simply not the case at all. The 49ers’ pick at #3, DE Solomon Thomas, is widely regarded as one of the biggest busts of the 2017 draft class. Maybe they just fared better in their next draft, or perhaps the team felt that it was simply out of its hands.
In his six-year stint, Mahomes has firmly established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever step onto the gridiron. His stats, both regular and postseason, are just mesmerizing. He has a combined total of 28,325 yards in 94 games. He has also tallied 227 touchdowns while succumbing to just 56 interceptions. So, the question remains: How close is the Chiefs’ QB from catching up to Tom Brady?
Tom Brady vs Patrick Mahomes: Who Is the Better Player After 6 Seasons?
The comparisons between the legendary Tom Brady and the up-and-coming Patrick Mahomes have been around for quite a while, especially among those who believe Mahomes will surpass Brady as the GOAT. Interestingly, comparing the two’s first 6 seasons gives us some fascinating insight into their careers. For instance, Brady won his first Super Bowl in his second year, while Mahomes clinched his first in his third year.
TB12 did win 3 Super Bowls in his first six years, as compared to the two Mahomes won. However, Mahomes has appeared in more AFC championship games (5) than Brady did in the same period (3). Both were named Super Bowl MVP twice, though Mahomes was also named regular season MVP twice.
Moreover, both are 3x AFC Champions, though Mahomes made it to the All-Pro team three times, while Brady managed to secure just one nod. The passing stats paint a similar picture as well. Mahomes accumulated 24,241 yards in the regular season in his first six seasons, while Brady had 18,035 at the time.
Additionally, Mahomes tallied 192 touchdown passes, a massive difference when compared to the 123 Brady notched up. All in all, it seems Mahomes is very well poised to take Brady’s crown away from him. It might just be a matter of time.
