Pep Guardiola: Man City manager applauds Liverpool after victory over Spurs

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that the title race will go down to the wire.

Manchester City reclaimed the top spot following 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium. The Citizens, whose hearts were broken on Wednesday after Champions League elimination were mentally stubborn to get the job done against the same they faced three days ago.

A debut Premier League goal from their academy graduate Phil Foden was the separating point in this tie where Spurs had plenty of chance to bury. The visitors struggled in front of the goal, thereby enabling Ederson to keep a clean sheet against a top side. With that victory, Jurgen Klopp’s side goes down to the second spot, but they have the chance to go back on top on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola has said that Liverpool are one one of the best sides he has ever witnessed following the victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Even though the Reds have a chance to reclaim the top spot, Pep Guardiola’s side could sit on top with equal games on Wednesday following the Manchester derby.

He insisted that the title is still in their hands, but any marginal slip up would cost his side. He was asked about the dramatic title race after the game, the Spanish International responded “The title is still in our hands. Every day with this club and these players – it doesn’t matter what happens next – we’ll fight until the end,”

“We’ll see how far we get. We are fighting with the best Liverpool ever, one of the best teams I’ve seen in my life.” added Guardiola.

Manchester City will have to travel to Old Trafford before a trip to Burnley, hosting Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium and the final match concludes at Brighton and Hove Albion. As for Liverpool, they will travel to Cardiff City tomorrow before facing Huddersfield Town at Anfield, and flying out to Newcastle United and the final day will be at Anfield where they will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“It was very important for the race for the Premier League. We know we cannot drop points,” added Guardiola, whose side were knocked out of Europe by Spurs on Wednesday.

“It was tight. Tottenham had more chances than the previous two games.

“We have been playing for the Premier League every three days for 10 months. You can feel the pressure.

“We could have lost the Premier League today – after Wednesday it was really tough. As a footballer, I could not have done what my players have done today.”
