Raheem Sterling miss vs Lyon Man City star misses open goal from five yards

Raheem Sterling miss vs Lyon: Man City star misses open goal from five yards  in their Champions League quarterfinal clash.

Pep Guardiola’s chase for a Champions League title without Lionel Messi continues as Manchester City crash out of the tournament with a 1-3 loss to Olympique Lyon. The only English side in the last 8 looked good to add the European trophy to their cabinet for the first time. Instead, their campaign ends with yet another quarterfinal exit.

Lyon took a lead in the first half through Mawel Cornet. Kevin De Bruyne, arguably City’s best player this season, equalised in the second half. Moussa Dembele handed the advantage back to his side with a 79th minute strike. City could have levelled the scores once again in the 85th minute. However, Raheem Sterling, inexplicably missed a sitter.

With 5 minutes left on the clock, Gabriel Jesus picked the ball on the edge of the box and squared it towards Sterling’s way. The English winger got to the ball with an open goal from about five yards out and somehow managed to shoot over.

City were immediately punished as Dembele scored another goal just a couple minutes later to put the game past them.

5 minutes of stoppage time was added but it was never going to be enough for a deflated City side to overcome the odds.

Lyon will now face Bayern Munich in the Semi-finals. Compatriots PSG will face another German side RB Leipzig. It is shaping up to be a PSG vs Munich Final. However, anything is possible as seen tonight.

We will have to wait and see if the tournament follows the script and dishes the expected or if we get an all France or German final. Who knows, as likely as it is, we could still get and underdog vs underdog final.

If we’ve learned anything from 2020, it is that nothing is too ridiculous to be completely impossible.
