Brazil played Serbia in their final group game of the World Cup.

The South American team saved the tag of ‘favourites’ on the day when Germany suffered a shock defeat at the ends of South Korea. The European heavyweights may have been eliminated from the World Cup in group stages, but Brazil eased past Serbia in their final match of the group stage. Brazil scored twice, a goal in each half, as Serbia bows out of the World Cup.

Paulinho opened the scoring for Brazil with a terrific touch on an equally brilliant long ball from Philippe Coutinho. The Selecao led a fast-paced counter-attack on the Serbian side, who could do little to defend. The Brazilians continued to attack throughout the match, and soon scored their second goal in the second half through a set-piece.

Thiago Silva put a terrific header past the Serbian goalkeeper from a corner, as Brazil doubled their lead in the match.

In the other match of Group E, Switzerland overcame Costa Rica as Josep Drmic scored a late goal in the 88th minute to ensure 3 points for his side. However, Brazil still topped the group on goal difference. Costa Rica finished the group without a single point.

Brazil will now face the group F runners-up Mexico in their round-of-16 match, while Switzerland will face fellow European side Sweden.
