Saina Nehwal has been inducted into the International Olympic Committee‘s Athletes’ Commission in a very big moment for the Indian athlete.
Thomas Bach, the IOC President, drafted a letter to Saina which said “Following your candidature for the elections of the IOC Athletes’ Commission during the Olympic Games Rio 2016, it is with great pleasure to appoint you in consultation with the Chair, as Member of the Athletes’ Commission”
Saina is currently nursing a knee injury and is on the road to recovery. She will be resuming practice sometime later this week, in a hope to return to action in November, provided everything goes as planned.
The Athletes Commission comprises of 9 vice Presidents and 10 other members and is currently chaired by Angela Ruggiero. The next meeting for the Commission is scheduled for 6th November 2016
Though Saina couldn’t muster a medal at Rio 2016, the IOC deemed her fit enough to be part of the Committee, something that has extremely pleased her father!
Harvir Singh(Saina’s father) expressed his jubilation by saying “I have become very emotional. It is a matter of great privilege for us that they recognised her and to be a part of the IOC. They thought that she could be of some use. She lost (a medal in the Olympics) because of the injury. We are proud of her,”
In times of despair for Saina, this nomination comes as a welcome boost and she would be hoping that such recognition helps her to get back to her feet as soon as possible.
