Sammy on Kohli's captaincy

Sammy on Kohli’s captaincy: Two-time World Cup winning captain believes that the Indian captain can win the World Cup for his team.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 less than six months from now, a lot of opinions with respect to the same have started to arrive. It is due to this nearness of the event that teams have started to prepare with eyes on the silverware.

Perhaps, it is why India coach Ravi Shastri had recently said that the time for changing and chopping is over now. By the next month or so, all team would be looking to find their apt combinations in a bid to play with it in the times to come.

Among one of the renowned names to make a statement regarding the Indian team and the World Cup is former West Indies captain Darrem Sammy. The 34-year old two-time ICC World Twenty20-winning captain has said that Kohli has it in him to win the World Cup for his team.

In an interview with India Today, Sammy was quoted, “With the World Cup being played every four years, he [Kohli] has to win the World Cup next year. I am not sure if he will be around when during 2024 [2023] edition. But I am sure he has the qualities to win India the World Cup.”

While Sammy’s comments brings oodles of hope for the Indian fans, him not being sure about Kohli continuing till ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is unlikely to go well with them. Going by Kohli’s current fitness and form, one finds no reason as to why he won’t play till 2023.

As recent as during the first match of Windies’ tour of India in October, Kohli himself spoke about his retirement, saying that he has a few years left. It is strange as to why retirement talks are being carried out for a 30-year old cricketer.

For now, the Indian fans would be hoping for Sammy’s words to come true next year. Read some of the latest Twitter reactions on Kohli below:
