At a time when top quality defenders come at a premium in the transfer market, it is quit surprising to see Barcelona and France star, Samuel Umtiti having a release clause of 53 million pounds.

While that might have been a large enough price tag a couple of years ago, 53 million is hardly anything in the post-Neymar transfer market.

The world of football was shocked earlier this month when Liverpool signed Virgil Van Djik for a 75 million pounds, a world record fee for a defender.

According to reports, Umtiti has become quite agitated ever since Van Djik’s transfer, as the Frenchman feels quite under valued by the club.

The centre-back has been a towering presence for Ernesto Valverde’s side this season, after impressing under Luis Enrique. He emerged as one of league’s best defenders, before he went down to a hamstring injury in the game against Celta Vigo early last month.

Umtiti has slowly developed in to one of the finest defenders in Europe, as he has formed a rock solid partnership with Gerard Pique. The Frenchman’s pace and strength are his most impressive assets, as he quickly became a fan favourite at the Nou Camp.

Not only can Umtiti defend the ball with some physicality, but also can move the ball around from the back of the pitch. His physical power alongside his intelligent movement with the ball makes him one of world’s best defenders at the moment.

His performances have not gone unnoticed either, as the big clubs from the Premier league are circling around the 24 year-old Frenchman.

According to respected French outlet L’Equipe, Umtiti’s representatives have met with Manchester City City and the France international is now said to be mulling over a switch, having been impressed by the project headed by manager Pep Guardiola.

City’s cross-town rivals, Manchester United have also made their move, as Jose Mourinho is interested in triggering Umtiti’s release clause.

Gerard Pique is apparently furious with the Barcelona board, as he wants the upper brass to quickly increase the release clause in Umtiti’s contract. The accomplished Catalan is aware of Umtiti’s unhappiness, and has personally asked club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, to act swiftly.

After losing Neymar to PSG over the summer, Barcelona will not want to lose another talent this season. Umtiti has been a superb addition to the Barcelona squad, and the Barcelona board must do everything it’s power to ensure that the former Lyon defender remains at the Nou Camp for a very long time.
