Sania Mirza lauds Mitchell Starc for watching Alyssa Healy's T20 World Cup final; takes a dig at subcontinent mentality

Sania Mirza lauds Mitchell Starc: The Indian tennis player appreciated the Australian speedster for travelling back home to support her wife.

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc recently missed the last ODI of Australia’s tour of South Africa in Potchefstroom. Starc’s request to watch wife Alyssa Healy play the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at home was accepted by Cricket Australia which saw the 30-year old player in the stands at the MCG.

Australia coach Justin Langer had made the development public while addressing the reporters ahead of the third ODI. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Mitch [Mitchell Starc] to watch Alyssa [Healy] in a home World Cup final and so we were happy to allow him to return home to support his wife and be part of a fantastic occasion.

“It is something we have been talking about for a while and, given Mitch has had a considerable workload in all three formats this summer, his heading home a couple of days ahead of the rest of the squad means he will have a chance to refresh ahead of our home and away one-day internationals and Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand that will wrap up our season,” Langer was quoted as saying.

Much like Starc making instant impact by dismissing New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum during the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at the MCG, Healy scored a quickfire 12th T20I half-century in a match-winning 115-run opening partnership with Player of the Series Beth Mooney.

Sania Mirza lauds Mitchell Starc

India Tennis player Sania Mirza lauded Starc for travelling back home to support her wife in one of the most important matches of her career.

Taking to social media platform Twitter to appreciate the “couple goals”, Mirza also took a dig at the subcontinent mentality which would have severely criticized had any player missed an international match to watch her wife play.

Mirza, who is married to veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik, often finds herself or her husband being criticized especially on social media.

It is worth mentioning that a screenshot of Mirza’s tweet was posted as an Instagram story by Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma. Married to India captain Virat Kohli, Sharma is another personality who gets trolled on the social media for various uncalled for reasons.
