"Does Not Reward Consistency": Taylor Fritz Blames Tour for Fall in Rankings

American tennis player Taylor Fritz will be seen competing soon after his disappointing stint at the Wimbledon Championships. The Californian is going to compete at the Atlanta Open on Thursday where he will be taking on Wu Yibing in his first match.

The 25-year-old player has slipped in the rankings this season. From being the World No. 5 in February to becoming the World No. 9, his performances have dipped in recent times. Fritz took a dig at the ATP for not protecting players on displaying consistency in their results.

Taylor Fritz Believes He’s Been More Consistent This Year

In the previous year, Taylor won three titles. It was his best performance in a single season and he has been unable to replicate those results this year. Although, he believes that he has been fairly on the mark this season too.

While speaking on this subject, he said,

The Tour doesn’t reward consistency as much as it does boom by winning titles or bust when you lose in the first round. I started this year pretty strong and have had more consistent results than last year. I’ve gotten a lot more into a lot of tournaments this year, but I’ve let slip some matches that I maybe didn’t let slip last year.”

In the ranking system, players are awarded points according to how they have performed in a particular tournament. In case they have won the tournament, they will have to defend all those points won the following year. If they are unable to go win it by even losing in the finals, they will drop a considerable amount of points due to which, they fall in the rankings.

Fritz Confident of Qualifying for ATP Finals

So far this season, Taylor has been unable to go deep into the Grand Slams. He did win at the Delray Beach Open earlier this year. However, he had an average grass court season this year, which led to him suffering in the rankings.

I am ninth in the Race to Turin. Which is quite encouraging because I feel like I have underperformed so much and I can do much better. With the many important games I’ve lost, I think what’s left of the season is encouraging. I just need to play harder in the big moments in the big games because so far I’m letting them slip away from me.”

Nonetheless, Taylor Fritz is on the 9th sport for the season-ending World Tour Finals. He is optimistic of his chances of qualifying for it and a string of positive performances will guarantee him a spot. Since he lost in the first round at the US Open 2022, he can capitalize by going deep into the tournament.
