Carlos Alcaraz suffers a shock defeat to Jannik Sinner
Sixth seed Jannik Sinner managed to cause an upset as he defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(4), 6-1 in the China Open semi-finals on Tuesday, securing a title clash against Daniil Medvedev. Sinner won the first set in tie-break, before going on the offensive in the second to win the games and seal his fourth victory over the Spaniard in seven encounters, in a new developing rivalry.
Carlos Alcaraz praised the Italian and admitted that it is very difficult to beat him. He further added that he was ‘out of his mind’ in the second set that ultimately cost him the match. The Spaniard felt that he will need to be more tactically stout to beat the Italian in their future matches.
“Obviously he played really good tennis, as well. I had to change a little bit my game. I couldn’t do that. I tried to play more tactically. I didn’t do well in that part. That’s something that I have to learn about if I want to beat Jannik. This is something that in the second set I was out of my mind. I just complaining a lot, something that is really difficult to play your best if you’re complaining or you mad of yourself. That what it happened.”
Alcaraz praised Sinner for his flawless game and admitted that he would have to perform better tactically to defeat the world number 4.

Carlos Alcaraz, the world number two, was knocked out of the China Open on Tuesday after fainting in the second set, giving Italy’s Jannik Sinner a place in the men’s final against Daniil Medvedev in Beijing. Both the players exchanged service breaks in a close first set that Jinner won in tie-break. The Spaniard could not get going at all in the second set and handed Sinner easy break of servers to lose the match 7-6(4), 6-1.
Alcaraz hailed Sinner as a ‘complete player’ and admitted that you have to play a perfect game to beat the Italian. The Spaniard even praised Sinner’s ability to return tough shots and produce perfect serves in tough moments. The Spaniard praised Sinner’s mobility and furthermore hailed him as one of the world’s best players.
“It’s really difficult to play against him. Obviously his mobility is really well, as well. You have to find the way to beat him or to be dangerous to his tennis. It’s difficult. That’s why he’s one of the best in the world.”
As Sinner and Alcaraz both try to make a mark on the tennis world, the rivalry between the two will keep on growing. Although Sinner leads the head-to-head 4-3, the Spaniard will be keen to beat the Italian next time.
