Following the conclusion of the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz will surrender his coveted World No. 1 spot to his rival Novak Djokovic. Djokovic’s win against Alexandre Muller meant the Serb would be the new world number 1 at the latest ATP rankings. Yet, Alcaraz isn’t one to back down easily. The young Spanish sensation is not only embracing the challenge posed by Djokovic but also believes that he will eventually reclaim his top-ranking status.
Carlos Alcaraz is enjoying his rivalry with Novak Djokovic as the two best players in the world keep on pushing each other in every tournament. The Spaniard is confident about regaining his world number 1 status from Djokovic given the number of tournaments coming up after the US Open.
Alcaraz determined to win back number 1 ranking
Novak Djokovic will be ranked number 1 in the world again after his first round win against Alexandre Muller at the US Open, however Alcaraz will be the top-seed until the end of US Open. The Spaniard was asked if the rankings matter to him, to which he was quicky to reply yes. Alcaraz said it is a goal for him to regain his top rank in men’s tennis and he will try everything he can to achieve that before the end of the season.
“Right now it’s a goal for me honestly. I said before that we are having a really good battle for the No. 1, Novak and I. When the tournament is over, I will try to recover as soon as possible. That’s my goal. I am working for that. The season has a lot of tournaments until the year is over. I’ll try to recover it before the tournament end, before the year end.”
Novak Djokovic, will now face the daunting task of defending his accumulated points. The landscape has changed significantly from the previous year, where Djokovic did not participate in any American events due to various reasons. The Serbian superstar had a lot of points to gain but nothing to defend, which helped him become the top ranked player in the world.
The tables will turn on Djokovic after US Open
The absence of Djokovic from American events the previous year helped his return to the World No. 1 spot. Due of his absence, he was able to gain points in other competitions without having to defend any from the American tournaments. This gave Djokovic a significant edge, putting him in a strong position to retake the top spot.
However, now with a significant points cushion to defend and a calendar full of high-profile tournaments, including the Shanghai Open, Paris Open, and the ATP Finals, Djokovic’s road ahead is challenging. This opens up an opportunity for Alcaraz to regain the top ranking if he can out perform the Serbian.
While the US Open may result in a temporary movement in the World No. 1 ranking, Carlos Alcaraz’s ambition to regain his top rank is a fascinating scenario. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Alcaraz’s quest to restore his throne.
