“Tim Southee, the Royal Challengers Bangalore bowler, was issued a reprimand during his team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday 17 May 2018,” the IPL release read.
For Level 1 breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding. Southee admitted to the Level 1 offense under 2.1.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials and accepted the sanction.
However, the board did not give the actual details of the incident that led to sanction.
It is beleived that he has been given the sanction because of his reaction towards the third umpire after the decision was changed.
During SRH’s innings, on the fifth delivery of the third over, Southee took a catch around the ropes by diving forward to dismiss Hales. The on-field umpires gave the soft decision as out but the TV umpire refused the claim and signalled not out.
Southee couldn’t stop himself from expressing his disagreement with the decision and RCB skipper Virat Kohli was seen chatting with the on-field umpires as well.
Even the former Australian captain Michael Clarke who turned TV commentators expressed his disbelief. “I can’t believe that,” Clarke said.
After getting the favourable decision, Hales went on to add some more runs to his name and get his team close to the mighty target. Despite that, RCB was able to seal the game into their side by 14 runs to keep their chances in the tournament alive.
After the match, Southee commented on the incident. “I thought I took the catch, but you never know,” Southee said.
“It looks worse on TV, third umpire’s decision, but we won and that’s what matters. The way AB, Mo, and Colin set the game up was great, it got tight towards the end but we held our nerve” he added.
