CSK's Suresh Raina completes 5000 runs in IPL

CSK’s Suresh Raina completes 5000 runs in IPL: Chennai Super Kings vice-captain achieved a major milestone in the IPL 2019 season opener.

During the first match of the 12th season of the ongoing Indian Premier League between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai, Super Kings vice-captain Suresh Raina became the first batsman in the history of the IPL to score 5,000 runs.

Raina, who has been consistent since the first season of IPL in 2008, started this season with 4,995 runs to his name. On the penultimate delivery of the ninth over, Raina ran a single off RCB fast bowler Umesh Yadav to achieve the milestone.

Coming in to bat at No. 3, Raina ended up scoring 19 (21) with the help of three fours before hitting a Moeen Ali delivery straight to long-on. The southpaw played some impressive shots before walking back to the pavilion.

In 177 IPL matches, Raina has scored 5,004 runs at an average of 34.27 and a strike rate of 138.19. His 12-year old career has seen him scoring one century and 12 half-centuries. The fact that Raina has never scored less than 350 runs in an IPL season speaks highly about his consistency in this format.

Having last played for India during India’s tour of England last year, Raina would be looking to make a mark on the basis on his performance in IPL 2019. While he is highly unlikely of finding a spot in the Indian team for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, an exceptional season might see the unlikely happening.

The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title. When not watching cricket, he is mostly found in a cinema hall watching a Punjabi movie.
