During the 23rd match of the ongoing 12th season of the Indian Premier League between Chennai Super Kings and Chennai Super Kings at Chennai, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to the worst possible start in a match which involved high stakes.
A clash between the top two ranked teams was anticipated to be a quintessential high-scoring match. However, the sluggish Chepauk surface got the better of Knight Riders as they were 44/5 in the ninth over.
Opening the batting for KKR, Chris Lynn (0) was found wanting against Deepak Chahar in the first over itself. Sunil Narine (6), who opened the batting with Lynn, was seen mis-timing a slog off Harbhajan Singh to Chahar in the second over.
The following over saw Nitish Rana pulling a Chahar delivery straight in to Ambati Rayudu’s hands at short mid-wicket. Just when it seemed that the senior duo of Robin Uthappa (11) and Dinesh Karthik (19) would provide KKR with the rescue act, both of them were the next batsmen to be dismissed.
Andre Russell saves KKR
In a bid to up the ante, both of them were seen getting dismissed in their attempt of playing forcing the proceedings on the bowler. All-rounder Andre Russell remained Knight Riders’ last hope before the halfway stage of the innings. Despite no support from the other end, Russell made sure that he posted he crossed the 100-run mark for KKR.
Kolkata eventually ended up scoring 108/9 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. Russell, who came in to bat at No. 7, top-scored for his team as he registered his sixth IPL half-century. He scored 50* (44) with the help of five fours and three sixes.
With bowling figures of 4-0-20-3, Chahar was the pick of Super Kings’ bowlers. Other than him, veteran spinners in Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir dismissed two batsmen each.
