Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from professional fighting in 2020 after his win against Justin Gaethje. Many, though, believed it was an early exit and wanted to see him battle a few more names before retiring. Georges St-Pierre was one of the names that came up multiple times for a fight with the Dagestani star. It was like a fantasy fight for the fans. But that did not materialize, and one of the reasons recently given for the same was Nurmagomedov’s $5 million demand. These comments, however, did not sit well with Team Khabib, and his management has recently responded to the claims.
‘The Eagle’ announced his departure from the sport for personal reasons and has repeatedly turned down substantial sums of money to return. However, a source close to Georges St-Pierre recently said that Nurmagomedov requested $5 million for a grappling match with the Canadian.
Team Khabib Nurmagomedov rejects $5 million claims
It was revealed earlier this year Georges St-Pierre, the former two-division UFC champion, is expected to return for a grappling bout on UFC Fight Pass. His opponent, though, has yet to be determined.
BJJ star Craig Jones, speaking about the same, revealed that the Dagestani icon was earlier pitched for this match but wanted too much money ($5 million) from the UFC to fight GSP in a grappling contest.
However, as per RingSide24 Rizvan Magomedov, Nurmagomedov’s manager has said the claims are not true and even made fun of Jones’ sources. He said:
“They offered to hold a fight, but the conversation didn’t even reach the amounts. They didn’t even discuss, didn’t ask how much and the price. They asked if there is a desire or not. Then it all ended. Where did Craig Jones get the $5 million figure from? Maybe his grandmother whispered these numbers to him. Looks funny.”
Why Nurmagomedov’s return is near impossible
After his 29th consecutive victory, ‘The Eagle’ hung up his MMA gloves forever. The loss of his father/coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, just months before the fight, was the driving force for his choice.
Abdumanap had a significant role in Khabib’s life. He not only shaped him as a fighter, but he also taught him essential ideals that helped develop Khabib into the man he is today.
Thus, the loss of Abdulmanap created a void in Khabib’s life. As a result, he promised his mother that he would not compete without his father’s support.
‘The Eagle’ is well respected as an athlete for his discipline and morals. Thus, Nurmagomedov, reflecting the same, has kept the promise he gave to his mother.
Additionally, as per several reports, the UFC Hall of Famer has even rejected offers numbered over $100 million. Considering all these, it is very unlikely that Khabib Nurmagomedov will compete again.
