Colby Covington, the former UFC interim welterweight champion, has a demeanor that elicits varied opinions from the MMA world. Some enjoy it, some don’t, but there’s no denying that ‘Chaos’ can be entertaining at times. However, it comes at the expense of other UFC competitors, as Covington attacks anyone in or out of his weight class. Recently, the Californian targeted the UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov and his close friend Islam Makhachev. Regardless of his insult, Makhachev’s coach Javier Mendez complimented ‘Chaos’ on his podcast, Javier Mendez podcast.
Islam Makhachev received his training from Nurmagomedov’s father. As a result, despite being a fighter of a different caliber, Makhachev is frequently compared to Khabib.
Several detractors have chastised him for not doing as much as Khabib and Covington did the same recently. However, Mendez seems unfazed by it.
Despite his jabs at Khabib Nurmagomedov and Makhachev, Mendez says he ‘loves’ what Covington does
Recently, on an episode of his podcast, Mendez in talks with Len, brought up the ongoing topics in UFC. One of which was Covington’s jabs at Makhachev and Nurmagomedov.
Mendez indicated during his chat that he enjoys what Covington is doing. He believes that ‘Chaos’ is better than other trash talkers since he does not include religion or family in his trash talk and instead focuses solely on the fighter. He said:
“I like what he does because Colby doesn’t come after country, doesn’t come after religion, you know? He comes after the fighter, and, etc, etc. And he belittles the fighter in whatever way he wants. I think it’s fair game.”
When asked about Covington’s words regarding Nurmagomedov and Makhachev, Mendez stated that he was not offended and that he loved what Covington was doing. Mendez feels that Covington is correctly building anticipation for his forthcoming fights. Mendez said:
“No, I love it.”
Mendez went on to say that he feels a fight between Covington and Makhachev is conceivable since he has backed both of them to win their forthcoming battles. As a result, Mendez appeared to be in high spirits, despite Covington’s remarks toward his teammates.
What did Covington say about Makhachev and Nurmagomedov?
Makhachev’s last bout, against Volkanovski, was not his finest, but he won. While discussing the bout with James Lynch, Covington harshly insulted the lightweight champion and accused him of not fighting ‘real men.’
Furthermore, ‘Chaos’ accused Makhachev of capitalizing on the fame of his childhood buddy Nurmagomedov. Not only that, but the American said that ‘The Eagle’ was previously afraid to face him.
However, neither Makhachev nor Nurmagomedov have responded to his remarks. Meanwhile, Mendez seemed to be unconcerned. While this is a fantastic build-up according to Makhachev’s coach, if Makhachev vs. Covington happens, it will be an exciting fight.
