Jon Anik assesses who among Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, Leon Edwards, and Stephen Thompson should be the next No.1 contender for the Welterweight title.
With a scintillating victory over Gilbert Burns at UFC 258, Kamaru Usman has apparently distanced himself from others. The fighter has now the most victories in the Welterweight division (13), and in-process has surpassed the great Georges St-Pierre.
While Kamaru’s achievements suggest that there is nothing left for him to achieve in the Welterweight division, some of the popular broadcasters and enthusiasts are also in a dilemma to figure out who could pose a challenge against the Nigerian Nightmare.
The Welterweight champion already has registered wins over some of the other elites of the division, such a Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, and Leon Edwards, and as a consequence, the popular conjecture “Who’s next” has changed into “If there is anyone left”.
UFC Broadcaster Jon Anik Tries To Simplify The Puzzle
Jon Anik, who commentated and called the UFC 258 headliner between Usman and Burns, addressed the topic of who should be the next one to qualify for the title shot. He mulled over the names of the remaining contenders and somewhat implied that each has his merits.
Anik via Twitter stated that a rematch with Leon Edwards interests him, but at the same time sided with Stephen Thompson as well when considered the “Fresh opponent” approach. Later, he brought in the names of Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington in the mix too.
1) On Kamaru Usman. What a fighter. Curious if he has any desire to eventually pursue a belt in a second division, given the trend of guys chasing that sort of thing. At welterweight, the Leon Edwards rematch intrigues me b/c the first fight happened so long ago.

2) Wonderboy is a fresh opponent for Usman and an interesting style matchup, so I get the fan appeal there. Usman v. Masvidal II is a moneymaker for sure but most believe Covington is the guy w/ the best chance to beat Usman in rematch. Based on the film, hard to argue otherwise.
