The next season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy will begin from September 24 in Bengaluru, Jaipur, Baroda and Dehradun. In Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, the Plate Group teams, or the teams of Group D, will fight for the top spot among their group.
With Chandigarh coming in as a new team, the total number of teams for the competition have reached 38. While Group A and Group B have nine teams each, Group C and D have 10 teams each.
The Top eight teams will clash in the knockout round which will begin from October 20 with the final being played on October 25.
As far as the last season is concerned, two heavyweights in Delhi and Mumbai played the final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It was a match-winning 105-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Siddesh Lad and Aditya Tare which saw Mumbai lifting their third title.
After Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and put Delhi in to bat, his bowlers bundled out the opposition for 177 in 45.4 overs. Pacer Dhawal Kulkarni and all-rounder Shivam Dube led the attack on the back of dismissing three batsmen each.
Delhi fast bowler Navdeep Saini reduced Mumbai to 40/4 before Tare’s sixth List A half-century saw Mumbai sealing the chase in the 35th over. Before getting out in the 31st over, Tare scored 71 (89) with the help of 13 fours and a six.

Vijay Hazare Trophy was started in 1993-94. For the first 11 years, state teams played against each other from their respective zones. It was only during the 2002-season that all teams played in groups to eventually see a winner.

In the 17 such seasons of the tournament, Tamil Nadu have won the tournament a record five times. Their last title victory had come during the 2016-17 season when senior batsman Dinesh Karthik had emerged as the highest run-scorer (607 runs in nine matches at an average of 86.71 and a strike rate of 102.01 including two centuries and four half-centuries).
Mumbai and Karnataka, who have won the last two season respectively, are joint-second on the list with three trophies each to their names. Having won the title only once in 2011-12 season, Bengal have ended up as the runner-up on a record five occasions.
