Indian captain Virat Kohli believes that the Australian cricket team possesses the ‘quality’ to win games of cricket even in the absence of two of their premier batsmen across formats – Steven Smith and David Warner.
Post saying that India won’t take anything for granted against Australia, Kohli was asked about the ball tampering incident, what he makes of the current Australian side and whether they will be vulnerable against India. Kohli refused to speak much about the incident, saying that it is in the ‘past’ now.
“It was something that all of us saw and it’s something that is in the past now. I don’t think I want to speak of that again and again. The vulnerability factor depends on how a team plays on a particular day. I’ve always believed that as much as you have so much experience of playing at this level, still new-comers can come in make an impact if they believe they can.
“When you stop on the field, everyone has an equal opportunity of upsetting any opposition and having their day with the ball/bat or in the field and the Australian team is more than capable of doing that even after losing their quality batsmen. They still have quality in their side to win games of cricket. We definitely will have to be at our absolute best to win against Australia in Australia,” Kohli was quoted.
With the news of respective bans on Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft set to be continued arriving today, Kohli was asked about his opinion on the same. The 30-year old cricketer said that ‘it is not his place to give an opinion on’.
“I honestly don’t know what happened before those decisions were taken. Obviously, everyone saw what happened. Unless I know the details, it is not my place to comment on because the decision has been made by someone and that has been going on the sidelines. That’s not my place to give an opinion on,” Kohli added.
The India-Australia matches tend to be press the accelerator, chiefly with respect to temperament. On being asked about playing Australia after the ball tampering incident, he said that India will focus on ‘good cricket’.
“We haven’t played against Australia [after everything that happened]. I can’t really say what the atmosphere is going to be on the ground. We will definitely focus on good cricket,” Kohli concluded.
