During the first day of the fourth Test of the ongoing India’s tour of Australia at Sydney, India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara scored his 18th Test century to surpass former India batsmen in Dilip Vengsarkar and VVS Laxman.
In which was his third of the series, it was his fifth against Australia and third in Australia. Pujara’s innings came off his usual modus operandi where he had to come out to bat in the as early as the second over after the fall of opening batsman Lokesh Rahul.
As has been the story in this series, the 30-year old batsman played the rescue act to start off. Post getting his eye in and with opening batsman Mayank Agarwal looking good, Pujara eventually started to accumulate runs.

On the second ball of the 51st over, Pujara thwacked a Marnus Labuschagne short delivery for boundary towards the deep mid-wicket region to complete his half-century.
He completed his century on the last ball of the 73rd over after guiding a Mitchell Starc delivery through the leg side. At stumps, Pujara remained unbeaten on 130* (250) with the help of 16 fours. With Hanuma Vihari at the other end, India would be hoping for the duo to post a formidable total on the board tomorrow.
The fact that not many Indian batsmen have scored three Test centuries in the same series in Australia speaks highly about Pujara’s effort throughout the series. The right-hand batsman has displayed significant resolute in key moments in this series. Had it not been his determined performance, it would have been difficult for India to gain a 2-1 series lead.
Watching Pujara play the Australian attack without any trouble throughout the day, Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon funnily asked him if he is not bored yet?

Very happy for Pujara. Here is a player who knows his game inside out, is comfortable with who he is and how he plays and is just a simple, modest man. And that quality is a big part of his cricket.
