During the first day of the fourth Test of the ongoing India’s tour of Australia at Sydney, India opening batsman Lokesh Rahul was witnessed getting out cheaply for the fifth time in the Test series.
After wining the toss, India captain Virat Kohli chose to bat first. Rahul, who was brought into the playing XI in place of Rohit Sharma, opened the batting alongside Mayank Agarwal.
After being dropped for the third Test, Rahul looked tentative for the six balls that he was in the middle. Although he scored a couple of boundaries, both of them came off his outside edge in a streaky fashion. He ended up scoring 9 (6) with the help of two fours.
Failing to spend a significant amount of time in the middle, Rahul edged Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood’s delivery to Shaun Marsh in only the second over of the Indian innings. His inability to remove the shine off the new ball is highly likely to work against him in the long run chiefly if he fails to stand tall on his reputation in the second innings.
Since the start of 2018, Rahul has scored 468 runs in 12 Test matches (excluding the ongoing one) at an average of 22.28 and a strike rate of 59.01. Barring his 149 against England at The Oval, his 328 runs have come at an average of 14.9.
Notwithstanding the amount of talent that he possesses, such numbers have it in them to rule out any opening batsman from a Test team.
Rahul’s failure in the first innings invited plentiful critical remarks on social media platform Twitter. Read some of them below:
