Much has been made about Barcelona’s semi final loss to Liverpool at the Anfield. The match will go down as one of the most exciting matches to have taken place in Champions League history. Liverpool would go on to win the competition. Barcelona on the other hand; this was the 3rd time in consecutive seasons that the away leg in the knockouts became their undoing.

In the 2016/17 season, they overturned a 4-0 deficit against PSG before failing to overcome their away loss at Juventus. The season after, they looked prime to beat Roma after taking a 4-1 lead. However, Roma scored 3 on their turf to eliminate Barcelona.
Despite taking a 3-0 lead from their semi-final encounter at home, Lionel Messi was aware of a comeback and reminded his teammates of what happened at Roma to remove any chance of complacency that may have creeped with their 3-goal cushion.

A new documentary featuring Barcelona’s 2018/19 season has been released and this particular match has been given a lot of focus in it. In the video we can see Lionel Messi speaking with his teammates before the match and urging them to avoid a repeat of the Roma disaster.
“Come on people. We are going to take a step forward,” Messi says. “We can’t waste this opportunity, OK? “Give everything, now that we are here.”
“We have to start strong. Remember, Rome was our fault. Nobody else’s. We mustn’t let the same thing happen. It was our fault and nobody else’s.”

Messi speaks to his teammate once again after half-time when Barcelona were trailing 1-0.
“Come on, come on, we need to start strong. Let’s keep going, we can do it,” he says.

Unfortunately, as we already know now, Barcelona would go on to concede 3 more to lose the match and the Semi final to Liverpool with an aggregate score of 4-3.
