Portugal crashed out of the World Cup after losing to Uruguay 2-1 in round-of-16.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal suffered a massive heartbreak as Uruguay ended their world cup campaign yesterday night in the round-of-16 game at Sochi. Uruguay’s manager, Oscar Tabarez oversaw a defensive masterclass from his players, which completely neutralised Ronaldo and the Portuguese attackers.

The centre-back pairing of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez kept the spaces tight and negated any attack from the middle. The only goal Portugal could score was through a corner in the second half.

Edinson Cavani scored a brace, one each in both the halves to secure a place in the quarterfinal for Uruguay.

A disappointing night for Cristiano Ronaldo was summed up in the extra time, when the Portuguese winger was given a yellow card for dissent. This was his second yellow card across two games, which would’ve ruled him out of the quarterfinal if Portugal had won.

Even though the European side was trailing 2-1, Ronaldo’s yellow card put Portugal’s poor night in a nutshell. People on Twitter were initially shocked at the referee’s decision, but seemed to be in agreement with the official once they saw the replay.

Earlier, Argentina was also knocked-out by France in the first round-of-16 match of the day. With Portugal’s loss, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo bow out of the World Cup, without a single goal in a knock-out match in tournament’s history.

France will meet Uruguay in the first quarter-final of the World Cup.
