What is Bruno Fernandes shirt number at Manchester United

What is Bruno Fernandes shirt number at Manchester United? The Red Devils latest recruit has already picked the number he wants on his back.

Manchester United completed the signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon on Thursday. The Portuguese had been linked with the club all through the summer. However, nothing materialised back then. The clubs finally agreed on their valuation of the attacking midfielder with a deal struck for a fee that could reach £68 million.

With United really lacking firepower in their attack, Fernandes is a welcome addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. He has scored 64 goals in 134 games for Sporting. Alongside a fully fit Paul Pogba, the pair could prove to be the midfield fulcrum.

What is Bruno Fernandes shirt number at Manchester United?

Bruno Fernandes agent Miguel Ruben Pinho provided the first picture of Bruno Fernandes in a Manchester United kit before the midfielder signed his contract. He uploaded another post on his social media account; revealing his client would be sporting the number 18 on his back.

The number 18 was previously worn by Ashley Young. However, his transfer to Inter Milan, freed the jersey for Fernandes to pick up. Interestingly, following Alexis Sanchez’s loan move to Inter, United’s n0.7 shirt, previously worn by club legends such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo – is technically free. However, with Ole conforming that Sanchez will return to the club and try to revive his career, it makes sense why Fernandes wasn’t given the shirt.

Cristiano Ronaldo sparked love for Manchester United

In a statement on the club’s website, Fernandes admitted that he has been a Man United fan since watching Cristiano Ronaldo play for the club.

“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club,” Fernandes told the United website.

“For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible. I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.

“I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team.

“A massive thank you to Ole and everyone at Manchester United for the trust they have shown in me and I can’t wait to start to repay that on the pitch.”
