The dynamics of WWE changed on the recent RAW episode after Triple H introduced the new World Heavyweight Title. WWE’s Creative Head declared that the new title holder will be decided at next month’s Night of Champions. He also assured fans a champion who is going to defend his title more than Roman Reigns does. It might seem WWE introducing a new title has something to do with the 2023 Draft. However, as per a recent report, the plan has been in the works for a long time.

Dave Meltzer, in the recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, discussed the newly introduced WWE World Heavyweight Title. He shed light on the management’s planning process behind the belt. Dave Meltzer also shared how the new championship led to some big pay-per-view changes recently.

The idea to introduce a new WWE title reportedly dates back to WrestleMania 38

In his report, Dave Meltzer revealed the reason why the “King and Queen of the Ring” PPV was changed to “Night of Champions”. He claimed it’s all because WWE wanted to introduce the new title.

However, in no way does that mean the company made the decision recently. The idea dates back to WrestleMania 38 where Roman Reigns unified the titles by defeating Brock Lesnar. Meltzer noted the company, in fact, felt the need for two titles even before the match took place last year.

According to him, because of the match stipulation, WWE decided to wait for some time before introducing the new title. By November 2022, the management was planning to bring the second belt on Night 1 of WrestleMania 39.

If The Rock had faced Roman Reigns this year, fans would have seen Seth Rollins versus Drew McIntyre for the second championship. Sadly, those plans had to be changed and hence, the decision was made recently.

Who is the leading contender to get crowned as the first WWE World Heavyweight Champion?

Based on the WrestleMania 39 loss, fans believe WWE might put the new title on Cody Rhodes as a consolation prize. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case according to WrestleVotes via GiveMeSport.

The report claimed that WWE has a leading contender in mind, and it’s not The American Nightmare. Currently, the management is considering putting the new title on Seth Rollins.

Shinsuke Nakamura’s name has also been considered but as much as The Visionary. As to Cody Rhodes, WrestleVotes told GiveMeSport that he is not in plans because of his storyline with Roman Reigns.

Nevertheless, day 1 of the WWE Draft saw Roman Reigns staying on SmackDown and Cody Rhodes on RAW. It means the latter might also be a contender for the new WWE title. Let’s see who ends up becoming the first to hold the championship.
