The brevity of Lars Sullivan’s run in WWE is a clear indication that wrestling is as taxing as it is onerous. After spending years training in the developmental territory, Sullivan made his debut in NXT in 2017. The young star had a promising career as he was one of WWE’s next big stars. His impressive physique matched Vince McMahon’s idea of what an archetypical wrestler should look like. After NXT, Sullivan was fast-tracked to the main roster by the company because of his potential. However, his budding career was nipped in the bud as the 6’3 giant asked for an early release from the company.
The former WWE superstar was reportedly dealing with anxiety issues that led him to early retirement. It is important to note that WWE did not want you to know about Lars Sullivan’s past.
During his rise to the top, it was unearthed that Lars Sullivan had made several offensive remarks about minorities, women and the LGBT community before he started his wrestling career. But WWE Hall of Famer thinks the main reason for his departure from the company was Vince McMahon.
Road Dogg believes Vince McMahon forced Lars Sullivan to quit WWE
Speaking on his Oh… You Didn’t Know podcast, Road Dogg spoke volumes about Lars Sullivan’s career in WWE. According to him, he was set to become the company’s next big star but due to his failure to handle pressure from Vince McMahon, Lars quit wrestling too soon.
Road Dogg also heaped praise on Sullivan for being an incredible athlete with an impressive build and being respectful at the same time.
Road Dogg pointed out that when Sullivan arrived, all eyes were on him and Vince McMahon expected big things out of him because of which Sullivan backed out and asked for his release from the company.
Sometimes you look at things that have happened within WWE & think to yourself, this has not done what it was meant to

“And so, I just thought oh, this guy is going to be somebody, Vince thought the same thing. I think it put too much pressure on the kid and he kind of backed out of it all. You know what I mean? And so, I don’t know but I thought, I thought he’s gonna be somebody. And the other kid is somebody who just beat Miz, and won about 12 grand the other night in a ladder match on Monday Night Raw,” Road Dogg said.
I know that Lars Sullivan may have made some terrible mistakes in his past, but I have to admit that I don’t mind the fact that he’s back.
Unlike everyone else, I focus on him as a WWE superstar and the fact that he’s an absolute freak and future world champion.#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/hJ9wXaSBMM

Unlike other released superstars who show up on other wrestling promotions after leaving WWE, Sullivan never wrestled another match. He also stated in one of his interviews that he was “likely done” with wrestling.
Lars Sullivan comments on his WWE release
Lars Sullivan was quietly let go of by WWE. He was granted his release in early 2021. It’s worth noting that Sullivan ended his contract with the company on good terms. According to Fightful Select, Lars was unaware that WWE would keep his release a secret.
Lars praised the company for dealing with it with “compassion and honesty”. Lars told Fightful that his inability to deal with anxiety attacks led him into quitting wrestling. It was also reported that his father’s death had gotten the best of him adding to his personal struggles. Sullivan made it clear in the interview that his wrestling career was over.
