WATCH: Virender Sehwag opines on MS Dhoni’s future ahead of India’s tour of West Indies
Sehwag opines on MS Dhoni’s future: Former India opener was recently vocal about the legendary India wicket-keeper batsman.
Former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future has become the topic of discussion across the nation. While it was speculated that Dhoni would hang his boots from international cricket after the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, it seems unlikely now.
With the Indian selectors set to pick the squad across formats for India’s tour of West Indies tomorrow, prime focus would be regarding Dhoni’s position in the Indian team.
Virender Sehwag on MS Dhoni’s future
Speaking during a TV debate for ABP News, former India opening batsman Virender Sehwag was vocal about the 38-year old Dhoni. Having himself retired from cricket in 2015, Sehwag believed that the decision should be left to Dhoni and no one else before highlighting the role of selectors in such a situation.
“It should be left to MS Dhoni to decide when to hang his boots. The duty of the selectors is to reach out to Dhoni and inform him that he is no more being seen as India’s wicket-keeper batsman going forward,” Sehwag was quoted as saying.
Confusion on Sehwag’s retirement?
The debate soon traveled on a different road as Sehwag’s retirement was brought into the question after he expressed his desire of selecting asking him about his retirement plans. “I wish the selectors had asked me as well about my plans so I would also have been able to inform them,” Sehwag said.

Sandeep Patil, who was the chief selector when Sehwag had retired, was also present in the debate and was quick to answer back to Sehwag. Patil further went on to take responsibility for any confusion back in the day.
“The responsibility to talk to Sachin [Tendulkar] about his future was given to me and [Rajinder Singh] Hans while the same responsibility was given to Vikram Rathore for Sehwag. We had asked him and he said he had spoken with Sehwag. But if Sehwag is saying that Vikram did not talk to him, I would like to take responsibility for the same,” Patil said.
“Rathore spoke to me after I was dropped…”
Before concluding, Sehwag explained how Rathore spoke to him after he got dropped. In his opinion, that wasn’t the right time to have a conversation. Three years down the line, Sehwag hoped that the current chief selector in MSK Prasad speaks to Dhoni before him being dropped.
“Vikram Rathore spoke to me after I was dropped. It would have made sense if he spoke to me before that. There’s no point talking to a cricketer once he is dropped.
“If MSK Prasad speaks to Dhoni after he is dropped, what would Dhoni say – that he would play first-class cricket and the selectors should pick him if he scores runs. The point is that the selectors should reach out to cricketers before they are dropped,” Sehwag concluded.
