"Incredibly hasty decision": Fans criticize C Shamshuddin for not watching Ben Stokes' attempted catch from more angles

Fans criticize C Shamshuddin: Fans of both the teams expected the third umpire to watch the claimed catch from more angles.

During the first day of the third Test of the ongoing England’s tour of India in Ahmedabad, third umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin was under the spotlight after the debatable manner in which overturned on-field umpire Anil Chaudhary’s decision.

It all happened on the fourth delivery of the second over when veteran England seamer Stuart Broad induced an edge off India opening batsman Shubman Gill’s bat. Gill, who had barely moved his feet to play Broad’s delivery, ended up edging the ball towards England vice-captain Ben Stokes at second slip.

Stokes, who appeared to complete the catch without much fuss, had the backing of Chaudhary as his soft signal was “out”. However, there was a slight doubt regarding the catch. Hence, it was referred to Shamshuddin.

Upon watching the replays, Shamshuddin was quick enough to overturn Chaudhary’s decision. While it appeared that some part of the ball had touched the ground, Shamshuddin could’ve done much better in watching the replays from other angles as well. There have been some cases in the past when such appeals show different results from different angles.

It was due to the same reason that not just English but even Indian fans expected the third umpire to see more angles. Perhaps disappointed due to the same, England captain Joe Root and fast bowlers in James Anderson and Stuart Broad looked exasperated whilst debating with Chaudhary.

Stokes, on the other hand, was left in utter shock upon knowing that the decision regarding his claimed catch has been overturned by the third umpire.
