Neymar can leave PSG next summer with the help of a FIFA rule after being denied a move this transfer window by the Parisian club despite interests from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

With the close of the transfer window, one of this summer’s longest transfer saga has finally come to a close. Neymar has been linked with a host of clubs this summer including Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The transfer window closed yesterday on the 2^nd of September. PSG refused to let go off Neymar to either of the clubs despite the Brazilian’s desire to move back to Barcelona. Barcelona chased his signatures fiercely. They however, failed to persuade the Paris blues who were looking to make most of their money back.

Neymar’s world record move to Paris has been a nightmare for both parties. He has performed well for them whenever he’s played. However, the forward is out of the team due to an injury for large parts of their campaign.

Other off-field issues have also strained his relationship with the club. At one point it seemed certain that his future was no longer at Paris. He is still a PSG player as off now. However, could make his way out of the club with the help of FIFA next year according to Mundo Deportivo.

The price of Neymar’s freedom

The Spanish outlet report that Neymar can leave PSG next summer with the help of a FIFA rule that recognizes the right of every footballer to leave his club, after completing what FIFA defines as the “protected period”, which is three full seasons or three years, whichever comes first.

After the “protected period” is completed, if a player still maintains the same contract as when he signed without having renewed, he is allowed to quit the club after paying a certain fee as compensation.

The compensation amount is calculated thanks to a formula that takes into account the player’s actual transfer fee when the sale happened, among other variables. The above-mentioned formula is prepared by FIFA itself.

Which means that PSG will not have the right to set an outrageous price for the Brazilian from next summer onwards. With Neymar having completed 3 seasons with them by next year, the price will be set at around €170million.

Any club that manages to pay the sum will have freed Neymar from the French Capital. The Brazilian will hope that is Barcelona who come forward for him next campaign.
