Gautam Gambhir wants BCCI to retire Yuvraj Singh’s Jersey: Former Indian cricketer has requested the cricket board regarding Yuvraj Singh.

Former India opening batsman and sitting MP from East Delhi Gautam Gambhir recently remembered former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh hitting six sixes off England fast bowler Stuart Broad in the ICC World Twenty20 2007. It was on the last Thursday that Yuvraj celebrated the 12th anniversary of the milestone.

Writing in his column for The Times of India, Gambhir admitted not having any expectation from Yuvraj hitting six sixes in one over in that match.

“We didn’t know what was coming. Hence, rather than worrying about the future we concentrated on the next delivery. I remember asking my dear friend Yuvraj [Singh] the secret of hitting those six sixes against England.

“Prince – as I call him fondly – said, ‘Gauti yaar bas ho gaya (It just happened), I never planned.’ What Yuvraj is saying is he kept it simple. He batted with a clear mind,” Gambhir wrote.

Elaborating more with respect to Yuvraj, Gambhir requested the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to retire his iconic jersey No. 12. Gambhir believed that Yuvraj’s performance in the T20 World Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 had it in it to deserve such a tribute.

“It was in this month in 2007 that we won the ICC T20 World Cup. The incredible Yuvraj Singh was in his elements. Just for the performance in that tournament and in the 2011 World Cup, I’d urge BCCI to retire the number 12 jersey that he wore. It will be a fitting tribute to a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer,” Gambhit further wrote.

In six matches, Yuvraj had scored 148 runs at an average of 29.60 and a strike rate of 194.73 including a couple of half-centuries. Meanwhile, Gambhir was India’s highest run-scorer and second-highest overall with 227 runs in seven matches at an average of 37.83 and a strike rate of 129.71 including three half-centuries.
