Marcus Stoinis emulates Chris Gayle’s celebration: The Stars’ all-rounder played a magnificent innings vs Sixers at the MCG.

During the 35th match of the ongoing ninth season of the Big Bash League between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers in Melbourne, Melbourne Stars opening batsman Marcus Stoinis registered his maiden T20 century to propel his team to 219/1 in 20 overs.

Opening the batting with Hilton Cartwright (59), Stoinis hit his first boundary in the first over itself. Been the highest run-scorer in the tournament so far, Stoinis continued his golden run by enhancing his lead at the top.

Having hit four fours and two sixes in the powerplay, the right-hand batsman gave early indications of what was about to come. With Cartwright taking his time initially, Stoinis made sure he didn’t let his partner’s low strike rate affect the team’s run rate.

It was on the penultimate delivery of the 10th over when Stoinis ran a single off Sixers spinner Lloyd Pope to cross the 50-run mark. Showing no intention of stopping, the 30-year old player went from strength to strength to post a formidable total visiting captain Moises Henriques won the toss and elected to bowl.

On the third delivery of the 16th over, Stoinis ran a single off Sydney spinner Steve O’Keefe to complete his century and emulate Universe Boss Chris Gayle’s celebration.

It is worth mentioning that Stoinis and Cartwright’s 207-run opening partnership is the highest ever partnership in the tournament. While the latter got out to Sydney pacer Tom Curran in the last over, Stoinis ended up scoring 147* (79) with the help of 13 fours and eight sixes.
