WATCH: Yuzvendra Chahal plays MS Dhoni’s role as Virat Kohli decides to opt against reviewing an LBW appeal in Auckland ODI
Yuzvendra Chahal plays MS Dhoni’s role: The Indian spinner was witnessed sharing a vital suggestion with his captain.
During the second ODI of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand in Auckland, India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was seen playing the role of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni after his suggestion convinced current captain Virat Kohli against opting for a DRS appeal.
It all happened on the penultimate delivery of the third over when India pacer Shardul Thakur beat New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill. With the ball hitting Guptill’s pads, the Indians appealed for an LBW but to no effect.
It was at this point in time that the Indians were pondering with respect to reviewing the decision. Kohli was soon seen in discussions with Chahal and wicket-keeper batsman Lokesh Rahul.
Chahal, who looked quite animated during the chat, was evidently seen convincing Kohli to not opt for a review. While it is not confirmed it Chahal cited Guptill edging the ball before it hitting his pads, replays confirmed the same being the reason behind the umpire giving the decision in the hosts’ favour.
After Kohli won the toss and invited New Zealand in to bat, they scored 273/8 in 50 overs in a start-stop innings. While Guptill top-scored for New Zealand with his 79 (79) including of eight fours and three sixes, it was veteran batsman Ross Taylor’s 73* (74) which powered the home team to a respectable total for they were once restricted to 197/8.
Chahal, who is playing his first ODI almost six months, registered bowling figures of 10-0-58-3 to be the pick of the Indian bowlers.
