Liverpool set to be crowned Premier League champions after UEFA ruling that effectively takes ‘null and void’ option off the table.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought several sporting events to a halt. With the likelihood of football returning this season decreasing by the day, the UEFA along with its member association have been looking for a way to overcome most of the problems that come with it.

UEFA released a statement after a meeting with its members that insisted that domestic campaigns would be settled on “sporting merit”. Which means the results so far will help decide the final placings.

The Uefa decision is likely to mean the Champions League places will be concluded on a points-per-game basis if the remaining matches cannot be played.

According to The Telegraph, UEFA effectively took the ‘null and void’ option off the table during the confederations meeting. This, they report, means that Liverpool will be named the 2019/20 Champions; regardless of whether the season is finished or not.

Alternatively, the Premier League could explore a play-off or mini-tournament format to decide who qualifies for European competition. However, this is not believed to be favoured by the clubs who regard points-per-game as the fairest method.

Even if it did happen Liverpool, given their commanding lead, could expect to be spared that process.

Should the League be decided on a point per game basis, the current top 4 of Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester and Chelsea will qualify for the Champions League. Manchester United and Sheffield United will head to the Europa unless City fail to overturn their UCL ban. In which case, United will move to the Champions League while Wolves take their Europa League spot.
