Peter Bonnington has played a crucial role in Mercedes’ success in the last six years while guiding Lewis Hamilton first on the chequered flag every time.
Bonnington is the race engineer for Mercedes and a role of a race engineer primarily is to be the link between the team and the driver, the sound you usually hear on television where the driver is speaking to someone in the team is of a race engineer.
Before joining hands with Hamilton, Bonnington was the race engineer of Michael Schumacher, when the latter was in Mercedes. Bonnington started his career with Mercedes as a data scientist.
He was nicknamed as ‘Bono’ by the F1 team courtesy to his last name Bonnington. Bonnington has performed a key role alongside Lewis Hamilton during their seven-year tenure together at Mercedes.

The most common catchphrase by Bonnington is “OK Lewis, it’s Hammertime.” was born, and Hamilton has always complied. “I’ve had Bono by my side my whole time here at this team, and you can hear our rapport when we’re in a race,” the driver said.
“Bono is fantastic at managing, because there is a lot of commotion going on on the wall and everyone is saying tell him this or tell him that, and Bono knows what to filter. He is the best filter. He always comes across calm and cool and collected.”
