Lanka Premier League 2020 start date: Inaugural season of LPL will be Sri Lanka’s first major T20 tournament since 2012.
Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed that the country will host the inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League in August-September. The development got the nod during Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee’s meeting held earlier in the day.
Having announced the tournament in June, SLC was waiting for confirmation regarding the pending India’s tour of Sri Lanka before finalizing the fixtures of their T20 tournament. Given the uncertainty around the India series, one feels it is the right move to commence their own T20 competition.
As informed earlier, Lanka Premier League will comprise of five teams which will be named after the participating cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.
According to a media release by Sri Lanka Cricket, the tournament will be played at four venues namely R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (Khettarama), Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium (Dambulla), Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Pallekele) and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium (Sooriyawewa).
Lanka Premier League 2020 start date
It was earlier reported that the inaugural season of LPL would be played between August 8-22. Given the Sri Lankan government’s decision to reopen international borders from August 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that date had appeared certain to be changed.

It has been eventually decided that the 23 matches of LPL 2020 will be played between August 28 to September 20. Going by the media release, SLC has further claimed that over 70 international players and 10 top-notch coaches have confirmed their availability to play in LPL 2020.
Having done well with respect to containing coronavirus, Sri Lanka appears to be an apt country to play cricket in the near future. It was due to the same reason that there were chances of Sri Lanka hosting the 13th season of the Indian Premier League.
While SLC is yet to make public all the quarantine-related protocols for the Lanka Premier League, there are strong chances of them confirming a title sponsor by the end of this month.
