Nico Hulkenberg to Alfa Romeo: The seasoned F1 driver is eager to return to Formula 1, and has confirmed talks are on with the Italian outfit.

Nico Hulkenberg has had a roller-coaster of a journey since returning to F1 a fortnight ago with Racing Point. His comeback race, the British Grand Prix, ended in disappointment after his car did not start prior to the formation lap.

Things improved considerably in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, where he qualified in P3 for the race on Sunday. This is an incredible feat considering he has returned to F1 after an absence of eight months. Sunday wasn’t as great, but Nico still managed a 7th place finish, earning for himself and Racing Point valuable six points.

Nico Hulkenberg to Alfa Romeo a possibility?

Nico Hulkenberg has raced for Racing Point’s earlier avatar Force India, but an incredible fight for seats is on in the team currently. Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll are the current full drivers, but Sebastian Vettel is expected to replace Perez from next season, when Racing Point becomes Aston Martin.

This leaves Nico with two realistic Ferrari-powered options for next season – Alfa Romeo and Haas. And speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, he confirmed that he is in talks with them.

“Yes, yes is the short answer. Of course I would very much like to return to Formula 1. I still love it here, it’s my passion. I’m not hopeless but I would love to come back and race again”

Nico suggested that talks with Alfa Romeo are more prominent, even mentioning Fred Vasseur’s name, the team boss. He, however, clarified, that the deal is currently far off, and will consider all possibilities before taking a call.

 “I’ve already had a number of conversations with Fred (Vasseur) in recent months.”

“Of course, making a deal involves a lot of things. You have to take the whole package into account.”

Alfa Romeo are expected to let go of Kimi Raikkonen, who is expected to retire after this season. This would leave Alfa Romeo with the chance to bring an experienced driver like Nico in their ranks.
