Boris Johnson intervenes in Lewis Hamilton knighthood reward
Boris Johnson intervenes to secure Lewis Hamilton’s knighthood reward, as would be breaking reluctance by giving the honour to an active sportsperson.
After the reports aired about Lewis hamilton getting a knighthood by the British crown during the New Year’s distribution, it has now been reported that English Prime Minister has stepped into the matter to stop up the things.
According to a report by the Sportsmail, Prime Minister Johnson is happy to overrule the reluctance usually shown within the sports honours committee to knight an active athlete.
Hence, making it certain that the 35-year-old Formula 1 racer would be getting the knighthood, 12 years after he first got an MBE reward. This decision would bring Hamilton along with his contemporaries Mo Farah, Andy Murray and Alastair Cook.
British Motorsports committee backs Hamilton
The unprecedented support by Johnson has pleased the British motorsports committee who totally adore their local hero Hamilton, who brought him 7 titles to his name.
David Richards, chairman of Motorsport UK, the national governing body, said: ‘If correct, this is wonderful news and well-deserved recognition for Lewis.
‘It is for the Government to decide but it is clear that it is not only his considerable record as a sportsman that is outstanding. There are also the other spheres in which he is now a leading voice, from environment issues to fighting for opportunity for all.’
It would be totally wrong for the UK to deny Lewis an award befitting his historic achievements because of where he chooses to live or work, or because his tax status has been misunderstood.’
Though Hamilton is not frantic to get this reward from the government, as in the recent interview he said that by driving an F1 car he isn’t making any change to the world, and also cited the examples of his forefathers, who served in a war to safeguard the national interests, which Hamilton thinks he is not doing currently.
