“Wanted Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to resolve their own problems”: Nets coach Steve Nash explains why he didn’t take timeouts against Hawks
Steve Nash explains that he didn’t take a timeout when the Atlanta Hawks went on runs so that Kevin Durant could figure it out.
The Brooklyn Nets have an iffy start to the 2020-21 NBA season. In their first couple of games, they seemed to be legitimate contenders as they blew out both the Warriors and the Boston Celtics in their first 2 games.
It has been downhill since there as they have lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Charlotte Hornets, and now the Atlanta Hawks. To top it all off, they have lost Spencer Dinwiddie for the totality of the season as he is out with a partially torn Achilles tendon.
During last night’s games against Trae Young and the Hawks, the Hawks would have random offensive explosions. To combat this, Nets head coach Steve Nash employed a peculiar strategy.
Steve Nash and Kevin Durant dish on the lack of timeout calls during Hawks’ runs.
It was noticed that when the Hawks would go on runs, Steve Nash and his coaching staff wouldn’t bother calling any timeouts. Coaches usually do this to halt the opposing team’s momentum but Nash and his crew couldn’t care less.
When asked about this decision to not call timeouts during those runs, Nash said he wanted the Nets players to resolve the problems for themselves.
On not calling timeout early, Nash said he wanted Nets to try and problem solve for themselves. Wanted to give team to time to figure it out.

This clearly didn’t work as the Nets looked quite clueless on defense and let the offensively gifted Hawks expand the lead to a point of no return for Brooklyn.
Kevin Durant also commented on the lack of timeout calls. He claimed he did not have a problem with how Nash handled the timeouts. He said playing through opposing runs was a way to test a team’s maturity and resolve.
This is Steve Nash’s first job in the realm of coaching in the NBA. he is bound to test out a variety of techniques to get his going. With only a week into his coaching career, there will be plenty more, ‘you live and you learn’ moments for the Suns legend.
