Twitter erupts as Rafael Nadal beats Kevin Anderson to clinch 3rd US Open and 16th Grand Slam Title
The ‘obvious’ transpired on Arthur Ashe today, as Rafa Nadal cruised to a straight sets win, never allowing Kevin Anderson even in a sniff, and clinching his 3rd US Open(winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-4) and 16th Grand Slam title in the process.
Rafael Nadal disposed off that final volley at the net and stood there with his arms up in delight, soaking in the praise and shifting the workload off to the historians, as a lot of records tumbled tonight.
For tennis fans, this could go downs as the greatest year of all time, with Federer and Nadal coming back from injuries and splitting the grand slams, winning two each, and taking everyone by surprise.
But let’s not delve too much into the Federer-Nadal debate, as today was all about Rafa Nadal.
He was on a mission and his demeanour seemed so from the time he stepped onto court today. Conviction oozed and Rafa did not put a foot wrong, completely demolishing Kevin Anderson, who for the entirety of the match found it tough to deal with the occasion and with Rafa’s brilliance.
For Kevin Anderson it was a night to remember, despite the result. A wonderful two weeks, some scinitillating tennis and bucket loads of emotions experienced, Kevin Anderson would be extremely proud of what he has achieved. Injuries have marred his career big time, and to comeback from them and make the final in New York, is probably the biggest achievement of his career so far.
This is how Twitter reacted:
He's closing in on Roger Federer.
Rafael Nadal was just too good for Kevin Anderson.
